How to Crop a Video for TikTok, Reels & Shorts Free (No Upload)
A free, no-signup workflow · October 2026
You shot a great clip horizontally — and now you need it vertical for TikTok, Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts. Cropping a video to 9:16 is a thirty-second job if you use the right tool and respect a few framing rules. This guide covers the aspect ratios each platform expects, how to frame the crop so it does not look like a mistake, and a free in-browser way to do it without uploading your footage anywhere.
The aspect ratios each platform wants
9:16 — TikTok, Reels, YouTube Shorts. The full-screen vertical format. Target resolution is 1080 × 1920 pixels. This is the one you will use most.
1:1 — Instagram and Facebook feed. 1080 × 1080. Square still works well for product demos and anything that has to sit evenly in a grid.
4:5 — Instagram portrait posts. 1080 × 1350. Fills more phone screen than a square without going fully vertical.
16:9 — YouTube. 1920 × 1080. Use this to tighten a wide shot or cut letterbox bars off a clip that was exported with black bars burned in.
The resolution math nobody tells you
Cropping throws pixels away — it never adds them. A 1920 × 1080 (1080p) horizontal clip cropped to 9:16 keeps only the middle 608 × 1080 pixels, which the platform then stretches to fill a 1080 × 1920 frame. It looks acceptable on a phone, but noticeably softer than native vertical footage. If you know a vertical crop is coming, shoot or export in 4K: a 3840 × 2160 source cropped to 9:16 keeps 1215 × 2160 pixels — comfortably above the 1080 × 1920 target. This is the single biggest quality difference between repurposed clips that look crisp and ones that look mushy.
Framing rules for a crop that looks intentional
Keep the subject in the middle column. Slide the crop box left or right so faces stay centred — viewers forgive a tight crop, they do not forgive half a face.
Leave room for the platform UI. TikTok, Reels and Shorts overlay usernames, captions, like buttons and progress bars on roughly the top and bottom eighth of the screen. Keep faces, on-screen text and your CTA out of those zones or they will be covered up.
Do not squeeze everything in. If the shot has two people talking, you cannot keep both heads framed nicely in 9:16 from a wide shot — pick the moment's focus instead, or accept that this clip wants a horizontal platform. Cropping is reframing, not magic.
Never stretch. A cropper changes the shape of the picture and what is inside it. Stretching a 16:9 frame into 9:16 makes everyone look thin and reads as amateur instantly.
Cropping with UmBreak (step by step)
- Drop your video in. Open the video cropper and drop in your MP4 or WebM. Processing runs entirely in your browser — the footage is never uploaded anywhere, which matters if it is unreleased client work.
- Pick the 9:16 preset. For TikTok, Reels or Shorts select 9:16. The presets for 16:9, 1:1 and 4:5 are there too, plus a custom frame if you need something specific.
- Drag the frame into position. Move the crop box until your subject sits in the middle column and the important action clears the top and bottom eighth. Preview the result at full size.
- Export and download. The cropped clip downloads to your device, ready to post. No watermark, no account, no waiting on an upload queue.
Honest limits of cropping
Three things a cropper cannot do. First, it cannot restore resolution: a vertical crop of a small or heavily compressed source will look soft, and no export setting fixes that — shoot higher-res next time. Second, it cannot trim or rotate: UmBreak's cropper changes the frame shape, it does not cut the timeline or fix sideways footage, so do that in your editor first. Third, it cannot fix bad composition: if the original shot has the subject in the far corner, no crop position saves it.
The workflow that scales
If you repurpose content regularly, make the vertical crop the last step in your pipeline: edit and clean up the audio on the full-quality master, export at the highest resolution your source supports, and only then crop for each platform. One good master, three crops — faster than re-editing for every feed, and every version keeps maximum quality.
